Young Talent Signs with Seattle in Junior Bok Mostert
TUKWILA, WASHINGTON (September 16, 2021) – The Seattle Seawolves have signed flyhalf-fullback option Juan Mostert through 2024. Mostert joins Seattle from Western Province and is set to make his Major League Rugby debut in the upcoming 2022 season.
“Juan is an extremely exciting signing. He’s young yet highly rated and respected in South Africa. He has an excellent distribution, run, and kick game – possessing all the fundamentals of a top-class fly half while being equally comfortable at fullback,” said director of rugby and head coach, Allen Clarke. “From our conversations it was very clear he also has the required game understanding and leadership qualities required for the position. We’re delighted to welcome Juan to the Seawolves and look forward to his development over the next three seasons.”
Mostert has been playing at the top-level of his age grade throughout South Africa’s pathway system since 2018. Starting with the Western Province U18 side, he progressed into the South Africa U18 Schools team who faced England, France, and Wales respectively. Mostert stuck with Western Province as he continued to develop and impress, earning South Africa U19 team selection in 2019. His next move was to Maties University where he quickly became a first-team player. Continued opportunities with Western Province brought him into U21 Currie Cup competition in 2020. Mostert was selected to the South Africa U20 Junior World Cup Junior Boks squad, but the tournament was cancelled due to the Covid-19 global pandemic. Once return to play was allowed, the flyhalf-fullback option continued his rugby career with Maties University and most recently competed in the 202 Varsity Cup and earned a senior contract with Wester Province. Mostert will provide key coverage to the Seawolves decision-making backs and will continue to foster his skills in Seattle.
“The Seawolves have been very successful in the past and it looks like a fantastic team to be part of,” said Mostert. “The environment and team culture looks awesome, and it makes me very excited to join the Seawolves to continue to learn and grow as a player.”
